10 ways Peyton Manning changed Indianapolis forever and always

peyton Manning didn't end his career a Colt, but Indy is where he made his greatest lasting impact.

peyton Manning didn’t end his career a Colt, but Indy is where he made his greatest lasting impact.

Peyton Manning’s announcement that his playing days are behind him has sent the media into a reflective frenzy.

Is Manning the best quarterback ever?  Does going out a winner enhance his legacy?  Did the Colts err in allowing Manning to spend the last four years of his playing career with the Denver Broncos?  All these questions without definitive answers.

Let’s talk about some concrete aspects of Manning legacy with definitive answers..

Indianapolis knows Manning best, and has the most to be thankful for.  Our thanks to Manning extends beyond the touchdown passes and relentless regular season success.  This city is different – bigger, better – than it would have been had Colts general manager Bill Polian pulled a different trigger with the first pick of the 1998 NFL Draft.

Bringing Manning to Indy was a game changer for the Colts and its city.  Is Manning the best QB ever?  People can debate that, but there is no doubt he is the most important athlete ever to the growth of a city.

Here are 10 of the multitude of things for which Hoosiers should be thankful to Manning:

10 – Manning taught Indianapolis football.  When Bob Knight coached at Indiana, he spent a lot of energy teaching fans about basketball.  Because of his desire to teach, fans learned at a higher level how the game works.  Manning, in a different way, taught fans how to diagnose defenses.  Fans at the RCA Dome and Lucas Oil Stadium would try to guess Manning’s read.  Through that, we learned about the game at a level many never get the opportunity to. 10 Reasons you are going to love March Madness starting this weekend in Indiana

It all comes down to this. March Madness in Indiana is special, and it starts this weekend.

It all comes down to this. March Madness in Indiana is special, and it starts this weekend.

Basketball is a great game 11 months a year, but in March it’s special.

And March starts this weekend.

If you live in Indiana, there is nothing like March.  Starting tonight, even passive basketball fans pay attention to the drama of sectional weekends, senior days & nights, conference tournaments, bracketology, and the Pacers drive for the postseason.

Here are 10 great reasons you should pay rapt attention throughout this weekend of March Madness:

10 – IUPUI is capable of winning the Summit League Tourney.  Jason Gardner’s Jaguars play North Dakota State Sunday at 6p in the first round.  Capable of beating or losing to any of their conference rivals, the Jaguars could be a great story next week.  Gardner is an up and coming coach, and his roster is talented and likable.   Continue reading

10 Reasons the graduate transfer rule is GREAT for college basketball

Max Bielefeld and Nick Zeisloft have been key contributors to Indiana's success because they were free to transfer with immediate eligibility.

Max Bielefeld and Nick Zeisloft have been key contributors to Indiana’s success because they were free to transfer with immediate eligibility.

Indiana clinch a Big Ten championship two nights ago by beating Iowa, and two Hoosiers were instrumental in helping IU to that win.  Max Bielfeldt and Nick Zeisloft combined to hit five-of-seven three-pointers to shoot the Hoosiers to an 81-78 win.  Both are graduate transfers.

The grad transfer rule allows athletes who have earned an undergraduate degree to move from one school to another with immediate athletic eligibility.

Many coaches complain that the rule should be abolished because it creates a culture of free agency in college basketball that is detrimental to the game.  This is, of course, self-serving nonsense.  [ed. note: I’m restricting this to men’s basketball because it’s top of mind, but the same rules hold true for football and other sports for both men and women.]

Here are 10 reasons the grad transfer is a force for good in college hoops:

10 – Coaches can work forever; players have a tight window.  Coaches often work into their 70s, socking away giant piles of cash for the pleasure of teaching young men the game of basketball.  Players get four years to develop and display their gifts for the joy of the game and a scholarship.  Forcing a college graduate to sit a year because he decides to switch employers was a self-serving and unnecessarily punitive measure by a system created and managed by coaches for whom career advancement is job one. Top 10 reasons Indiana Basketball has avoided collapse this season

Hoosiers celebrate their Big Ten Championship after holding on for a win at Iowa.

Hoosiers celebrate their Big Ten Championship after holding on for a win at Iowa.

Indiana got it done last night.  They had chances to turn that 14-point lead into a loss, but finished Iowa to clinch the regular season Big Ten Championship.

That’s a hell of an accomplishment for a team that spent the last three seasons failing to meet the expectations they promoted to fans and media.

With a schedule front-loaded with cupcakes, and few serious tests until the final seven games of the Big Ten season, it looked to most like the Indiana Hoosiers would be a fool’s bet to finish strong.

Losses in Maui to Wake Forest and UNLV did nothing to calm fears that this would be yet another Indiana team that showed promise, but couldn’t close the deal.

When the Hoosiers beat Iowa – a good team with everything to play for on an emotional senior night – they showed that this will not be a redux of the previous Indiana teams that underachieved as a the schedule flipped to March.

The Hoosiers awakened this morning at least 2 1/2 games in front of the posse of the six teams chasing second place.

There is still plenty of work to be done, but it isn’t too early to take a look back at the 10 reasons Indiana is playing its best basketball this season at the time it regressed in 2013, 2014, and 2015.  Here they are:

10 – IU keeping it simple.  When things looked bleak for Indiana, it appeared players were confused on both ends of the floor.  Complication yields confusion, and basic yields confident and repeatable performance.  Tom Crean simplified the action on both ends, and the Hoosiers responded by performing at a higher level. Eight reasons Fox Sports Erin Andrews is due 17-million apologies

Erin Andrews cries everyday because 17-million people have watched a video of her naked.

Erin Andrews cries everyday because 17-million people have watched a video of her naked.

It’s victimless, right?  Watching a nude Fox Sports sideline reporter Erin Andrews in her hotel room on our laptop, tablet, or smartphone.  The video is there, and our not watching doesn’t make it go away.

Yeah, not so much.

Andrews is a sports reporter who during her time at ESPN and Fox has become a celebrity, and there can be a substantial price for celebrity when exploited by a click hungry opportunist.

Anyone who watched Andrews testify yesterday in her lawsuit against both the hotel chain and perpetrator who booked rooms next door to Andrews for the purpose of surreptitiously videotaping her naked, saw how that video being watched by 17,000,000 sets of eyes has changed her life.

Given the ease with which any of us can generate and post videos for billions to watch, there needs to be a greater understanding of the damage that can be done because of our choices to “share”, or our decision to watch – even from the privacy of our own home.

That damage was seen in every tear Andrews shed yesterday as she re-visited the misery the video has caused.

Here are eight reasons Andrews is due an apology from anyone who watched the video:

8 – Private moments are not pornography.  Voyeur videos are much worse than porn – if that is possible.  At least with professionally produced porn, the actors are aware they are being taped in compromising positions.  Voyeurism strips the victim of a feeling of safety and privacy in their most vulnerable moments.  It erodes trust – a luxury we should be able indulge in without fear of betrayal on behalf of one another. Ten reasons Dan Dakich is the best talk radio host in Indianapolis

Dan gets a lot of exposure on ESPN, but that has little to do with his popularity on 1070 the Fan.

Dan gets a lot of exposure on ESPN, but that has little to do with his popularity on 1070 the Fan.

There is a petition being circulated via social media to remove Dan Dakich from 1070 the Fan, and it is having exactly the opposite effect if the management at Emmis listens to it correctly.

Only one unpardonable sin exists in media, and that is to inspire indifference.  Dan is definitively not the cause of any boredom among those listening to his show.

On a scale of one to five, with one representing hate and five being love, Dan scores lots of ones and fives.  Those who rate him somewhere in between are few and far between.

Here are the 10 reasons why Dan is simply the best at what he does (present company excluded!):

10 – There is nothing milquetoast about the show.  Dan never bores – ever.  Being easily bored is a common trait among great hosts.  Dan moves from topics before they bore listeners because he moves on before they bore him.  This is why being a talk host works so well as a career choice for those with ADD or ADHD.  They are never forced to be bored because they always determine the topic choice as the show moves forward.  At the first hint of tedium, we turn the page – or start fresh. Top 10 reasons the Indiana Hoosiers are the best story in college basketball

Yogi Ferrell's evolution is one of the best stories of the to this point magical 2016 season.

Yogi Ferrell’s evolution is one of the best stories of the to this point magical 2016 season.

Indiana Basketball stands very near an accomplishment that would have been impossible to imagine three months ago.

After losing to Wake Forest, UNLV, and Duke during a two-week stretch that was thoroughly disappointing, Indiana found itself, and is in the drivers seat to win the Big Ten regular season crown over teams like Maryland, Michigan State, and Iowa that have spent a significant portion of the season ranked in the nation’s top 10.

This season could still unspool and crash, but right now the Hoosiers appear to be very solid on both ends of the floor in a way that can be repeated during what they hope is a long March and dare-to-dream –  April.

There are many wonderful sidebars to ponder as the season continues, and here are my favorite 10:

10 – The next chapters might be even better.  The book of Indiana’s 2015-2016 season is 75% complete, but the remainder could be even better.  After beating a terrible Illinois team by 27, Indiana is two wins from one of the least likely Big Ten regular season championships in memory.  And after two trips to the Sweet Sixteen as the twin high water marks of Tom Crean’s previous seven seasons as the steward of the Indiana program, the potential for a deeper run is right there in front of this team. 10 reasons why the Josh Speidel story is the best of the past year

Josh Speidel is greeted at public appearances with standing ovations, and for good reason.

Josh Speidel is greeted at public appearances with standing ovations, and for good reason.

Great guys fighting courageously against adversity is the narrative of every great sports movie.  Rudy, Hoosiers, Bad News Bears, Mr. Carter, Miracle, My All-American, Bend It Like Beckham, Rocky, Hoop Dreams, and every other great sports movie circle that territory.

The story of Josh Speidel, an Indiana All-Star basketball player from Columbus North High School, who 13 months ago was living the dream. trumps Hollywood.

He had his final month of high school basketball and a college career at Vermont to look forward to when the car he was driving last February 1st was involved in an accident that left him in a coma fighting for his life.

Josh continues to fight to recover bit by bit from the brain injury that immediately recalibrated the priorities and goals of a kid and his family on that tragic night just over a year ago.  It has also prompted some much-needed (in my case) internal examination for those who follow his ongoing battle to regain complete functionality.

Here are the 10 reasons Josh’s fight is the best story of the past year:

10 – The Speidels have learned how strong they are.  Thank God I have no idea what it’s like to get the phone call parents fear most – the one telling us to get to the hospital because our child’s life is in danger.  With that call, everything in the Speidels’ life changed.  If the Speidels had dark moments when they questioned their faith, no one could blame them, but we have never gotten wind of any.  By all accounts, they clung together, focused all attention on helping Josh, and continue to move forward in love not bitterness and grief.  No one would ever invite this level of adversity, but learning – as the Speidels have – how deep your reservoir of faith and strength is something few of us ever discover – thankfully. Top 10 reasons this is the most important offseason of the Grigson/Pagano era for the Indianapolis #Colts

Job #1 for the Colts is to make sure Andrew Luck has reasons to smile this offseason.

Job #1 for the Colts is to make sure Andrew Luck has reasons to smile this offseason.

Colts fans will be watching the NFL Draft Combine this weekend with keen interest as potential draftees sprint, lift, and answer idiotic questions. because the Horseshoes have holes – lots of holes.

First round misses in 2013 (Bjoern Werner), 2014 (1st round pick dealt for Trent Richardson), and 2015 (Phillip Dorsett – at least being judged by his 2015 contribution) have left the Colts with an old roster that requires immediate attention on both sides of the ball.

That means Colts GM Ryan Grigson and coach Chuck Pagano need to hit early and uncover gems late in the 2016 NFL Draft if the Colts are going to contend for a championship in 2016.

These are the 10 most important issues for the Colts to resolve between now and the NFL Draft:

10 – Frank Gore will be 33 on May 14.  I love Gore as a guy and running back, but the athletic skills needed to succeed as a running back seem to recede every week once they get to 32.  Gore had a mostly productive 2015, but at some point his love of football is going to be replaced by a longing for the same body he used to build a hall of fame caliber career.  The Colts need to find a second option who can do everything Gore can, but longer and faster. Top 10 reasons to love Indiana Pacers guard Monta Ellis

Monte Ellis cares more about winning than being liked, and that's a pretty good reason to like him.

Monte Ellis cares more about winning than being liked, and that’s a pretty good reason to like him.

The Indiana Pacers lost a tough game in Miami last night, and guard Monta Ellis was a big reason the Pacers left Miami wanting.

Ellis hit only two of 17 shots (worst shooting percentage in the NBA this season for a player with more than 15 attempts), and missed a free throw late that would have won the game for the Pacers in regulation.  Instead, the game went to overtime, and overtime has not been good for the Pacers this season where they have put together a horrible 1-6 record.

If you had to point to a single reason the Pacers lost last night, there is no doubt Ellis would be it.  George Hill was 0-for-7 from the field, so he wasn’t without blame, but Ellis was brutal.

There is no better time than today to remind ourselves of the very good things Ellis does to make himself worthy of some love as the Pacers move into the final third of their regular season.

As he is the Pacer least interested in being liked, it might seem odd to list 10 reasons to love him, but while we mourn the missed shots, we shouldn’t ignore the good stuff too.

Here are the top 10 reasons to love Monta Ellis:

10 – He turned down more money to come to the Pacers.  As residents of a city not renown for much, nor gazed at with envy from those who live in many of America’s 50 largest cities, we especially like those who like us.  Ellis showed his affection for the Pacers and Indianapolis by reportedly taking a few bucks less to come here than roll out to Sacramento.  I know.  Sacramento.  Not exactly the Big Apple, Windy City, or South Beach, but still.

9 – No night owl behavior from Ellis.  If Ellis does much outside basketball and fishing, I never hear about it.  His favorite pastime is sitting alone in a boat with a line or two in a river or lake.  That doesn’t sound like a guy who is going to be clubbing at 3:30 in the morning screaming, “You can’t arrest me!  I’m Monta Ellis!”  There was the sexting scandal when he was with Golden State, but that appears to have been an isolated incident.  Basketball, fishing, family.  That’s about it.

8 – Monta’s contract is reasonable.  Because of the new salary cap that will go into effect next season, Monta’s deal (worth $11 a year through 2018-2019) will be a bargain after this season.

7 – Monta isn’t running a corporation.  Monte Ellis plays basketball for a living.  He is not a brand-building one-man conglomerate.  Basketball, fishing, and family are the only focuses in his life.  In an era where money made for off-court endorsements can dwarf NBA salaries, his reluctance to enter that world runs counter to many.  When Ellis makes a decision about his career, there is no panel of advisors at a conference table with him.  It’s not a bad thing to view yourself as a brand, but it’s not good when you have 13 guys on a roster doing it.

6 – He takes The Weight late.  With the game on the line, Ellis is very comfortable driving hard to the basket, creating contact, and taking the last shot.  He’s won a lot of games for the Warriors, Bucks, Mavericks, and Pacers that way, and given the reluctance of Pacers in the recent past to shoulder that burden, Ellis taking it strong is a great piece of the puzzle for their success.  Lyrics to the Ballad of Monta Ellis (with apologies to The Band) go like this:

I pulled into Bankers Life, was feeling like I might get hot
I just need some place where I can get up a shot
Hey, mister, can you tell me, where a man might find an open look?
He just grinned and shook my hand, “No” was all he said.
Take a load off PG, take a load for free
Take a load off PG, and you put the load right on me

5 – Pacers needed a hard and cold killer, and that’s Ellis.  The Pacers are nice guys who enjoy a postgame hug with opponents win or lose.  Ellis only cares about his performance during the game – not being popular off the court among his peers – or at least it appears that way.  It also appears that Ellis doesn’t only enjoy the Pacers winning, but the losses those wins bring to the Pacers’ opponents.  Sending opponents home miserable seems to please Ellis.

4 – Monta will keep teammates humble.  Early this season, I asked rookie Myles Turner if he was the best shooter on the Pacers as team president Larry Bird suggested a day or two before.  Before Turner could answer, Ellis yelled “Hah!” and started laughing.  Turner and fellow rookie Joe Young appear to be fairly modest guys regardless, but Ellis has certainly been a component in their humble attitudes on the court and off..

3 – Late game drives will send him to the line.  Settling for late jumpers has long been a frustrating late game trait of the Pacers.  Ellis has no problem exploding past (or into) a defender to create an offensive opportunity that otherwise would not have existed.  He’s a tough guy who might lose, but won’t be beaten.

2 – Make or miss, Monta is always going to be Monta.  Last night in Miami, none of Ellis’s 15 missed field goal attempts kept him from making or missing another shot.  Scorers know the baskets will come eventually if they keep shooting.  Water finds its level, and Monta Ellis knows that.  NFL coaches say that cornerbacks need to have a short memory.  Shooters need one too.  Ellis will never turn himself off.  Ever.  Some nights that will win games for the Pacers.  Other nights (like last night), they will lose because of it.  Have to accept the bad Ellis with the good Ellis.

1 – Monta does not need to be liked.  it goes deeper than that.  Monta not only doesn’t need to be liked, he seems to feel genuine indifference toward those in his path.  The Pacers needed an infusion of insensitivity on their roster, and Monta has plenty of it.  He’s willing to say what’s on his mind no matter the effect it has on others.  You don’t want 13 guys like that on a roster, but one can be a big help.
