When Indiana Pacers power forward David West signed a new deal to remain a Pacer for the next three years, team president Larry Bird was effusive in praising West’s ability to lead.

As West discussed Paul George as a teammate, and future star in the league, it was obvious why Bird feels the way he does. West is still a very productive player, and I don’t know if he’ll ever be ready to take the pay cut that would be necessary to coach, but the guy oozes the thoughtfulness and confidence of a very effective leader.
West is fascinating in that when he talks, I absolutely believe what he’s saying. His words are carefully chosen, and his mannerisms demand attention. There is a palpable sense that West sees himself as a mentor for George, and that he is driven to see him succeed.

Every championship team needs a guy like West in the locker room, and because of West’s belief in George, he is much more likely to succeed.
I’m posting this video not only because of the assessment of the best 23-year old in the NBA, but because I like listening to what the guy has to say about anything.
The Pacers will look back on this past offseason as critical in the history of the franchise, and among all the move executed by Bird, re-signing West won’t be the most heralded, but it will be the most important. His combination of words and actions will keep this team on track, and his scoring and rebounding will win games.
